Lusben has completed the refit of M/Y KOS, the 37-metre Benetti Classic 120 launched in 2009. Developed according to the integrated approach that defines the Azimut|Benetti Group refit division, the project involved a comprehensive programme of works spanning structural modifications, onboard systems, technical upgrades, exterior areas and interiors, with the aim of improving operational efficiency, enhancing the onboard experience and extending the yacht’s service life.
The refit started in August 2025, shortly after the yacht was acquired by her new owner, and was completed in approximately six months thanks to the coordinated efforts of Lusben’s project management team, specialised technicians, skilled craftsmen and interior designer Laura Rossi, who led the interior redesign.
“The Lusben site in Viareggio is a benchmark for complex refit projects on yachts and superyachts, thanks to the combination of technical expertise, production capabilities and extensive experience built over time,” says Paolo Simoncini, Site Director of Lusben Viareggio. “KOS is a tangible example of this approach: a project that required the coordination of structural works, technical upgrades and interior refit activities, all developed through an integrated process that enables us to support owners and industry professionals at every stage while ensuring quality, reliability and continuity throughout the project.”
From the earliest stages, the owner and project team agreed on a clear objective: to preserve the yacht’s original layout and distinctive character while selectively enhancing functionality, comfort and the perception of space.
On the main deck, Lusben coordinated significant structural modifications, including the installation of a new full-height window in the main saloon and the technical assessments required to reconfigure the staircase area between the main and upper decks. The project highlights Lusben’s ability to manage complex structural modifications by integrating design, engineering and execution within a single operational framework.
“As Lusben celebrates its 70th anniversary, projects such as KOS confirm how refit has evolved into a strategic process for enhancing and preserving a yacht’s value over
time,” comments Ferdinando Pilli, General Manager of Lusben. “Today, technical expertise, infrastructure and design vision must work together to meet the expectations of owners who are increasingly focused on quality, reliability and long-term value retention.”
At the same time, the interior redesign developed by Laura Rossi introduced a new interpretation of the onboard spaces, centred on greater fluidity, brightness and visual continuity. The new transparent balustrade around the staircase allows natural light to
flow between decks, while a backlit bar unit acts as an architectural focal point,
redefining the perception of the entire space.
The same philosophy guided the remaining interior renovations. In the corridors, selected opaque surfaces were replaced with satin-finished glass panels to increase perceived brightness, while new fabrics and materials were introduced throughout the guest accommodation to enhance comfort, durability and ease of maintenance. In the galley, the existing layout and finishes were updated to improve ergonomics and functionality while preserving the original character of the space.
“KOS does not deny what she has been, nor does she try to become something else,” adds Laura Rossi. “The project was conceived to lighten, simplify and enhance the yacht’s original identity, creating spaces that are brighter, more fluid and more natural to experience every day. KOS remains deeply a Benetti Classic, yet today she expresses a new vision of comfort and life on board. Perhaps that is the greatest luxury of all: feeling completely at ease in a space”.
Alongside the living spaces, Lusben carried out an extensive programme of technical and engineering upgrades. Works involved the main engines, generators and key onboard systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, hydraulic circuits, water treatment systems and monitoring equipment. Activities included major maintenance operations, the overhaul of critical components and preventive replacement programmes aimed at improving reliability, safety and operational continuity.
The entire lighting system was upgraded to energy-efficient LED technology, accompanied by a complete redesign of both interior and exterior lighting schemes. At the same time, the bridge and onboard electronics were updated to improve usability, navigational safety and support for the crew.
The exterior areas also underwent significant refurbishment. The teak decks were fully restored through extensive maintenance and refinishing works, while the sun deck was reconfigured following the removal of the existing Jacuzzi, creating additional usable space and providing greater flexibility in line with the owner’s lifestyle requirements.
Among the most demanding aspects of the project was the complete repainting of the hull and superstructure. Thanks to Lusben’s dedicated facilities and environmental
control procedures, the work was carried out in a fully protected environment equipped with air management and dust-control systems. The final finish achieved gloss levels approaching 98 gloss unit, comparable to new-build standards and characterised by exceptionally low surface contamination.
With the completion of M/Y KOS, Lusben further reinforces its position as a leading refit and maintenance specialist for yachts and superyachts, leveraging an operational model that combines technical expertise, industrial capabilities and design culture to manage complex projects throughout the entire lifecycle of a vessel.
